Assistance Dogs for the Disabled and Children with Autism
With effect from 15th Mar. a person who has an assistance dog may claim €825 (a tax credit of €165) in medical expenses to cover the cost of their dog. Assistance dogs are trained to assist persons with specific needs such as the disabled and children with autism. The dog must be supplied by an organisation accredited with the International Guide Dog Federation such as Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Up to now the relief was only available for Blind Person’s guide dogs however the inclusion of assistance dogs will provide some welcome relief for other physically and mentally challenged persons.
